The '10 FIFA World Cup organizing committee has just 140,000 tickets remaining and expects to sell out of all of its ticket inventory, organizing committee CEO Danny Jordaan said today at a press conference in N.Y.
Organizers began selling tickets over-the-counter in South Africa two weeks ago and have sold more than 360,000 tickets since then. Jordaan said that total ticket sales will determine organizers final profit, but he expects the World Cup to generate enough revenue to allow organizers to turn over $80-100M to South Africa's soccer association.
Approximately 373,000 foreign visitors plan to travel to the World Cup, far fewer than the 483,000 initially estimated, and there have been concerns about the cost of traveling to South Africa for the event as some flights from the U.S. top $2,000 round trip. Jordaan acknowledged the concerns and said South Africa Airlines had dropped its prices to $1,400 and accommodations in the country were quite competitive. As for other airline prices, Jordaan said, "There's nothing I can do about it. They're not under my control."
